Baby Thomas, or the youth of my tender little alien

Tom was born in France, Boulogne-Billancourt (9200) a few minutes from Paris. Baby, it was not active: it made no sound, not moving much, had almost no expression. About 3 months, I am a little worried it was my third child, after all! This lack of communication was not blatant, but to me it was obvious. He slept well, ate well, watched the light properly react to the sound. Oddly, his first reaction when you approached him to bite our fingers, and / or scream. I also remember having written that when he was awake and in my arms, he looked at me with such intensity, focus and depth that it put me uneasy. It was like the look of an old man in a small body of baby ... And he was not smiling. I talked about Tom's behavior to my pediatrician. She said just give it time. Thing I did.

Time passed. Thomas has continued its evolution almost normally. He sat down, stood up, walked at normal ages. However, he kept his baby talk until they came into class and he cries often for no apparent reason today.

Tom has always been angry. While small, it tended to hit the ground face several times. At 18 months (we were now back in Quebec for over a year), he started daycare at frequencies of 3 days a week. I was working as a freelancer and these 3 days were enough for me to fulfill my contract. It was a disaster! Blows repeatedly, violence, launching of objects, mordage ... He calmed down after 3 weeks 3 days quickly became a half-day (!) Spent in the park in the room, closed the door, the guard sitting next ...

At 2 years, his older brother left home. At 2 1 / 2 years, his father is gone. The combination of these two events are very likely "the trigger". The crisent have increased in frequency several times per day, and intensity. My attempts to calm my little Tom and reassure remained unsuccessful. In fact, when Thomas put himself in this state, the more I approached, the violence increased, up to remind me to hysterics. It was so small and so enraged! I am really worried then. It was obvious to me: my toddler did not respond as others. He was different ...

I again consulted my pediatrician. After several visits and tests, he told me about temperamental children. I did not know .... but it might be possible .... I had already heard a little like that, so distant and nebulous ... then maybe ... And I'm the hardest thing in my life! Under the guidance full of good will from my doc, I put a lock on the door of my son 2 1 / 2 years, placed a chair near the door, seated myself there, asked him every 5 min chrono: "Tom, are you ready to calm down?" desperately hoping hear the "yes" liberator who had, in fact, 2h30 to 3h later. During those long minutes, I heard my son screaming, hitting his head and nose to the ground to bleed. One evening, blood has flowed under the door. This was only his nose, but I got the fright of my life! And it was the last night ... for him and for me!

On the next visit, my pediatrician said we could not pursue the investigation further until they were educated. And me? I had to do what, in the meantime? Remained there, watching him hurt himself? Nonsense! I started reading about all the psychological and psychiatric disorders I could lay the hand of the Child King (is that my education?) through the Child Teflon, to the anguished Temperamental Treble and Schizophrenia. But voila! Nothing was what I saw and lived with Tom.

Our friends started to space their visits, invitations have become scarce; family cacasser , which is in secret to the poor education of my son ... Everyone had his own ideas ... The ruling is so easy! And people fear and shun what they do not understand. Lolo my son and my daughter began to suffer from these negative attitudes ... Myself, I did not dare go out, fearing the unpredictable reactions of Thomas and not knowing explain. For me, the rule was clear: do not want Tom, it does not want me or want my other children. We are a family, we took all or none!

I continued to seek answers and tell those who remained close to me that my Tom was not a bad boy. It was different, and for now, I could not say why. Tom was then nearly 5 years and I saw her come to school like this that I would deliver the good news or at least stabilize my little alien! I was wrong ...

syndrome of Asperger's: the invisible handicap

Yep! My son has an invisible disability. It seems to work well but often can not. As it is endowed, the problem is not academic success. Disability takes the form of bad behavior, and it is difficult to distinguish.

This title is not mine. However, I appropriate today as it is, in my view, the problem.

Children with Asperger syndrome often have high IQs, some are very gifted and most have very good language skills, although they are often unable to adequately express their thoughts and emotions. This syndrome is similar to autism, although different, and represents one of the most complicated problems that society faces.

Asperger syndrome is a form of high functioning autism - high level of social adaptability ... Excuse me ???... in fact, it's a little fuzzy. To some experts, it is indeed a form of autism, for others it is a disease (a disease not because we're born and not heal with.) Related to autism, but separated .. . For Government is ... nothing (Asperger syndrome is not recognized by its instances (NDT and QC). To me it is a brain defect that causes the inability to read minds, to extrapolate, imagine learn not association, which causes a deficiency in social skills.

Before continuing sharing our experience with my family and me, I think it is good to give you a brief definition of what Asperger syndrome. In order to explain it as simply as possible, I met passages of text (in italics) that I find it quite explicit while remaining accessible. I apologize for not have written references ... Early in my research, I was not paying attention to these details ..... I took you to not take offense!

It is very easy not to help these children. They have no outward signs of disability and are often very intelligent, able to disguise their shortcomings with big words or using a mountain of knowledge. They love repetition, language and learning and can easily memorize large amounts of information, but can not accept changes sensory (smell, light, touch, etc ...) to establish or interrupt routines . Distractions like this are losing their footing and they can react violently.

"A child will understand the theory of relativity yet. But it will explain hundreds of times he must line up to go to recess."

To me, this sentence says it all! Because the line up, to his room, dressing, do not go to school in pajamas, be polite and appropriate, raise his hand before speaking, have a method to organize, are not hitting social actions.

Unlike autism, there are no noticeable delays in language or cognition, in personal skills or adaptive behavior, with the exception of social interaction.

Learning by association
When Tom was two, we had a gas fireplace in the lounge. Style wood stove. Since our move, I educated the children about the dangers of home: That's hot! it burns! Keep Away! :-) It did not take 2 minutes to Tom puts his hand on the stove top. He knew the definition of the word "hot". Unable to deduct, "burn" had no meaning for him. He absolutely had to experiment. Result: 2nd degree burns!

Asperger syndrome can lead to tics, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behavior, of defiance, attention deficit, sensory problems, mood swings and even access rabies. And it gets frustrating and child, and his entourage

Language Nonverbal
You never had a dog. However, during the first ride of your new puppy, when he will turn in circles, nose to the ground, you will figure quite rightly that he will soon make his little gift. My son will pull on the leash because this "language", he does not understand.

The biggest obstacle for these children is to link the characteristics of the syndrome with the terms of the social environment. There must be a balance between giving these children the world predictable and they need to prepare for a world that is not at all.

The real world is built on facts abstract and unpredictable. Take the example of the school: the children set out different ideas for discussions or fire alarm goes off. This can make a very stressful day for these students. The teacher took the opportunity to see the lesson in progress for a new topic. The student with Asperger's syndrome will remind you that today the lesson is supposed to cover pages 17-23 of the book.

Understanding the situation is essential to help these children get a good education. Bad behavior is not defiance. It's just that these children can not understand the problem and monitor their reactions to seemingly mundane activities.

As in all things, the Asperger Syndrome has good sides. Among them include a more developed intelligence, an impressive capacity for learning, a phenomenal memory, a great difficulty lie, charm (innocence) irresistible. Yep! :-). Aspis people therefore have no disability and are doing quite well as adults. They are definitely "strange" but are autonomous and socially appropriate, or at least sufficiently adapted to live and understand some of our society.

How To Make Diced Tomatoes Crushed

A diagnostique SVP!

The reason my approach (2007-2008)
Doing research, read, teach me attempt to understand and prepare for some contingencies is since the birth of Thomas, first my motto. My approach to diagnosis is the result of two stages. First, I wanted to be sure the funds me that Tom's behavior, if amplified, is not the only effect of turning family. I helped Thomas from an early age to develop social skills and with the help of former headmaster the Three Suns in Laval (Jean-Sebastien Desrosiers) and a specialist teacher (Ms. Edith Smith) Thomas has done a remarkable journey for her mother. At the end of the year, it was still identified as having a "severe problem behavior" but he managed his anger much better and his aggressive outbursts and we hope he manages to adapt sufficiently to continue his normal primary school. The situation is much worse in the first year ... We went back to square one ...

I wish to avoid a tag, like it or not, will my child for years to come. This label will, of course, provide support to my son. But it will also hurt him, to some extent. Schools will take heed and people will talk, there will be releases, pity. But the fact is there: Thomas deficient social skills, and I can not, on my own, help them level.

The second step was taken by the school. The new manager tells me of specialized school exclusion. His teacher does not manage more service Homework expelled him, saying he could not accept a child who has no motivation. However, I was convinced that motivation is not the problem of Thomas. The school has even made a complaint to the DPJ because he was hiding under the desk when an adult was angry against him! (Seems this is a sign enough to live in a violent family ...) The company tells me of a child with bad manners and excessive gratuitous violence. And again it was wrong. The difficulty was deeper than that, I was already certain at the time. It was time to put a name to explain and help the social milieu to receive Thomas, and, above all, to bring Thomas to understand how the social world so he can finally integrate.

Finally, it is an old work colleague who, by dint of hearing my phone battles with the school principal, tells me about Asperger syndrome. And, EUREKA! was Thomas more than 70%! So although my psychiatrist countered this possibility, despite my surroundings more than septic, and because a principal concocted a folder to place my Tom in a school for crime, I drove at the walls ... and they have fallen!
