The last step: the driving test

At the end of maintenance, the operations manager with whom I had already began talking to my EMT comes pick me for the test. I am curious what will be the vehicle used ... No worries on that side, and it is true that forgetting the anemic engine, I feel very comfortable doing. The manager will even tell me "it looks like you drove it all your life". I'll take that as a compliment and finish the test with banana ears. It brings

the vehicle at the depot and the manager asks me to reverse park in a place perpendicular ... at first I'm puzzled because I knew there would be a small maneuver to perform ... but in fact I realized without problems: in 10 seconds, and super right the first time! I tell myself that I really can not bowl. In fact, those who have already made heavy vehicles know: have good retro, it's only half the job of fact.

In conclusion, all that day I went home without knowing if I was convinced during the talks of the previous hours, as I was certain to have downstream of the operations manager for my selection. However, with hindsight I think this test was rather pushed. I think a person who has not had the opportunity to drive different types of vehicles in his life it would probably come out with more difficulty.

The moral of all these tests is that recruitment is really not easy to get into large enterprises. Conversely, in some small coach, I heard echoes of conductors on Friday for having a nice little dialogue with the manager, and hop hiring immediate start on Monday ... the very inexperienced with only a permit fresh in your pocket! But of course, was for part-time hourly minimum wage ...

In my case, this test was therefore the last stage of the recruitment procedure, and only two weeks later I receive telephone confirmation that my application was accepted. Two weeks during which I must admit I had trouble getting to sleep!

Three weeks after the phone call, that is to say, five weeks after this last series of tests and interviews, I finally received a fat envelope of the training center chosen by the company, with all information practices.

We begin the 15/11 (6 months after initial contact with the company). There is a folder and of course the complete document for medical fitness. To this end, I go to the doctor Monday approved. In principle I am in perfect health but I hope not to be penalized by my slight squint ...

Second interview the day after marathon

maintenance with two counts of Group I was led to meet a human resources manager. Here the interview was much more classical and more standard tone: neither nice nor disagreeable just professional and courteous.

During this conversation, no trap or psychological dirty trick (or I did not see that fire!). It is limited to the list of typical questions ... but did not miss any: qualities, defects, motivation, how I imagine the job, I am aware of the constraints, is what I know now where I see myself in 10 years, compensation proposed suitable for me, etc. . Some have even asked several times with different formulations, but otherwise it never deviates from the canvas "classic". The head leaves me happy to move certain parts of the interview, we come to discuss specifically enough for the operation of the enterprise, gives citizens the management contract by the city and the renewal thereof, etc.. So there is a desire that the interview is like a real dialogue, so I do not see the time passing: we left after 1:20, which is not short.

Ultimately it was a traditional but relatively maintenance of a high level: the questions were chained fast enough and it apparently expected I answer that as a lawyer at the helm. So it was again important to feel comfortable in their shoes, otherwise be intimidated. Quite honestly, I probably would not be able to get out if I had been a few years younger and inexperienced job interviews ... Moreover, it does not seem to me that there are many VC less than 30 years in this business ...

What New Year! This is the first of 5 is good. What am I saying? It is Excellent! And thanks to the arrival of new players. In fact, we lived at night. Today we see the day ... I tell you ...

all started last June ... After countless mazes and blunders of the school, and with the help and support of my TS CLSC I extorted a meeting with the school, meeting that management could not refuse politically more .. We've finally set up an action plan taking into account not only their academic needs, as was the case until today, but also need emotional Thomas. Well, That was a good start ... The summer has passed, and September 2010 arrived.

As every earlier this year, I requested a meeting with the new teacher and new TES Tom. Appointment obtained 10 days after the school year (Ah! no no no! I will not wait one month :-)). Strong past experience, I went equipped with my little folder: Intervention Plan (IP), history of Thomas, informative document on Asperger Syndrome, the little guide'interventioin school (a small wonder, by the way!), and a good sharp verb: We do not force a child with ASD make eye contact when spoken to. It does not increase your ... We do not punish ... We use positive reinforcement to the death ... He was permitted to leave the classroom when anxiety or distress is on the rise, ... He gives 25% more time for exams, etc. ... And she answered me. "But Madame! Everything you say is going to be!" . And wham! straight to the heart! Wow! What turnaround! Is that the damsel, notwithstanding his youth, knows the world of autism and ASD ....

Today, Thomas agrees to do his homework! ;-) He is happy in the morning to go to school. He can verbalize his needs a little more. The response plan is followed to the letter. More yet! TES reinvented according to the needs of Tom :-))) and that's going to flatter her hair when Tom feels the need! Re-Wow (I'm usually the only one able to touch as well ).... This is the first school year or the director just say hello ... In other years, he avoided me! ,-P Besides, I still hesitate between anger and fear, to explain this strange behavior !!...;- p.. And, finally, his record went from secondary priority for the screening of dyslexia within school ...

What change of behavior from my son! Of course, Thomas was aged in 2 months ... He has aged ... 2 months! :-) Of course, Lawrence, Mister + ADHD is medicated (see article Family and medication: yet ???). Of course, IDRC embraqué with us last July ... Yet I am convinced that these reasons did not have a secondary impact on Thomas ... If today my son seems happy, less anxious and happy to go to school, it is primarily because the school provided him at last! a platform adapted to their needs. Because at last! he feels secure and valued. So yes, Thomas belongs in a school and a class called normal. It was enough to use the resources available, and open mind ... When you think it was so much to do! ...

The first battles with the school term 4 years .... 4 YEARS!! It's long! Of course, there will be others! Anyway! It's good to feel the stress fall! phew! A real little happiness! No matter that this decline is temporary, we will exploit to the fullest!

And it continues ....
My daughter Sarafaye, started school this year. So I Lawrence in 6th, 4th and Tom Sarafaye in kindergarten ... I suspect Sarafaye ADHD ... And as all this was a love story ... with the genes! Here is the new slogan of the family: "The ZOO Black Sheep": where you will find under one roof and rare specimens ... very precious! :-)

No! I have not forgotten you! ... :-)

A fortnight after the interview with the psychologist recruiter, I received a call from the operations manager of the transportation company, informing me that my application was selected for further events. Indeed, I am called 5-6 weeks later for two interviews and a driving test. Four months of delay between the start of recruitment and the latest round of talks, which itself precedes the entry into actual function of several months, that's what we call a company with "a long-term vision ;-)

mid-September so I actually find myself in the corporate offices for a day marathon at intervals of two hours will succeed a face with two group leaders, a face HRD, and a test drive in a van. My faith is pretty good saw ... I have always been in favor of passing the difficult tests as quickly as possible, and I prefer to do away once and for all with the talks rather than having to return for three successive days. For their part, I think that putting the driving test in the afternoon after two interviews lets see how we cope with a bit of fatigue and stress in the legs.

But I decide to do what's most stylish without falling into a suit and tie. Dressed all in black, I wear dress pants super well cut and a nice black striped shirt, tucked in the pants this time. Class, discreet, nickel. In fact, I'm in costume but without a tie and I take it is still good to leave the coat at home. Once again I'm lucky and I think I did fly. Indeed, that day my interlocutors are dressed the same way, frankly see more cool. The costume would probably have been too much.

First interview: duo group leaders

Without doubt one of the most difficult conversations I ever knew. Clearly, the two leaders have a role to play: one that will remain stoically staring at me throughout the interview that the second attempt to remove all of my comments throughout the duration thereof. Having traveled extensively and held many different professions in the past, I quickly understand that my role will be to convince them of my desire (réelle!) ask me now and get into this profession in the long term. It is clear that officials fear ending up with a CR unmanageable, unstable, or who does as he pleases. In fact it is not my case: I'm pretty good dough and reliable, but in general curious about life and never feared to find myself in need, it explains my eclectic. Now to convince them, we try to push me in my corner. For example, people ask me why I do not want to pursue art as I did before I answer it presented such a disadvantage, I was suddenly cut off and I am told that this is wrong! Obviously it is unsettling, even when I know what I mean ... So I refine my explanation and seeing that it is possible break me on this subject, it cuts me to speak again shortly to follow up on something else. Another example: I was wondering if I can still see myself as a CR in 30 years. Of course it is a question that is difficult to answer (who knows what can happen in 30 years), but my faith I do not see a priori no objection and began to convince them ... I get asked 2-3 sub-questions in order to have me continue in this direction, and wham! Suddenly one of the officials closed the vote and I understand that the CR often become disgruntled after some years of service, and that the company cares (texto!) whether we stay at home longer or not, that in any case it is not they who pay the job training but Pole ... So, why bother spending 5 minutes trying to find out if I still saw myself in 30 years ...?

short, I could still give many examples that have occurred during this maintenance schedules for one hour intense. But to summarize, I think the main goals of this test were to test the consistency of my motivation, to check my resistance to stress, my composure, and my good mood. I even feel somewhat the actual content of my answers were not always important and it was only a pretext to find a way I "pushed around" a bit and watch my reaction.

I stayed cool and smiling all the way and, though a bit taken aback on several occasions, I managed to keep a positive attitude. Honestly, I'm not in their heads but I think that was the most important and it has borne fruit. The highlight of the show was, after these questions so still relatively aggressive, asking me how I found the interview. In all honesty, I responded tit for tat "oh, it went very well!". In fact, I was proud to have kept a good attitude despite the rather restrictive. I think this response was also crucial because basically, when we spent a day driving with customers who do not greet you, moaning because it is not moving fast enough or insult you because you do not let not enter the bus with a 3 meter cabinet, and although it is important to have enough in itself positive energy to stay cool.

A week after spending screening tests, I get a call from the recruiter inviting me to a personal interview with the psychologist who we had passed the tests. We were late June, the rendezvous was fixed at the end of July. An additional month of waiting ...

The day of the interview is armed with my best shirt and my best shoes I went there. I have long hesitated to "make farting" suit and tie, but relatively many experiences I had in different types of jobs showed me that it is not necessarily appreciated in making too. See same as arise in the garment that is more or less than we will for the job is perhaps the best idea. For example, as a storekeeper I I am often presented in work pants and safety shoes (all nickel course!) and conversely for office jobs I hypothecation of a costume, a nice shirt and nice tie. The CR of our urban network bearing neither tie nor even for the most part their regulation uniform, I decided to make a simple, clean, mat and actually take a look similar to most of- them for their service: traditional leather shoes, well-cut jeans, nice shirt. Nothing more. Personally, I found it incongruous to arrive in costume for a job like this, and I think I have done well. (though I will adopt dress different tactics in subsequent interviews that I have with company officials in person, I'll explain why in a future article).

This initial interview, which lasted 1:30, is based on a principle of dialogue. I'm not bombarded with questions, I have no right to the usual on my qualities, defects, where I see myself in 10 years, etc.. The psychologist asks me just talk to me really quickly and we exchange our views on different aspects of the trade, business, my past life ... all smile. She finally released the result of the famous psychological test 300 questions, this is a sheet containing a dozen traits with graphs and explanations for each. Apparently I'm in the standard battery for most traits studied, except one or two where I deviate slightly. Good, good ... Apparently I'm not crazy! We discuss how these always sympathetic character traits: I am in agreement with what the results suggest? Can I give examples of situations experienced? For a few minutes later psy spring so obvious, but it must be good to go!
In the end, I feel that the interview serves just to determine if I have the personality type that may be suitable to the job of CR. We're not yet at the stage where we talk about my motivation, salary, working conditions, etc.. this will come later, with company officials.

The hour and a half goes by very quickly and at the end of the interview, the psychologist told me that there is a psychomotor test to pass. Hold on! Fortunately, I knew more or less what to expect through Yeril blog. The test which I am facing is quite confusing at first: to move with two cranks a mobile element in the middle of a narrow corridor that forms a circuit which will require the greatest number of laps in a given time. Avoid touching the edges of the corridor, lest buzzer mobile. The orientation of the cranks that this is not intuitive at all: for example it will turn clockwise crank placed before him to go back into the mobile ... The first round counts for nothing, and luckily because I make a disastrous performance! The psychiatrist offered me even a second round of testing. Fortunately, I ended suddenly mastered the craft (the time of the trick dip) and makes the final score that seems pretty good. The psychologist explains that in addition coordination of movements, the goal of the game was also to check the resistance to stress. Indeed, it is at 50 cm distance it scrupulously observes the candidate toil on the device, which is already in itself quite difficult to handle. Having found a way to joke with the therapist while performing the exercise, I spent the aspect of "stress" hands down;)

Before leaving, I learn that the 60 candidates who had presented screening tests, only 28 people were successful and are entitled to the appointment with the psychologist. Of the 28, the psychiatrist did retain a dozen for the following stages of the selection. And of that dozen, the company did keep at the end only 8 to begin training. I decide to go free and ask him point blank what are my chances at the end of this interview and, surprisingly, she informs me that there is a strong likelihood that I'm actually selected, given the candidates she has already met. However, I avoid too rejoice because it has left a handful to see. While I am, I asked what could be, she said that is a professional recruiting, my weak points that could cause my application to be less valued by those responsible Company. Again to my surprise, she seems satisfied that he poses the question and can answer honestly. The elements that give me will help me greatly in fact!

Moral of this recruitment so far: have a sincere attitude, open and frank seems to be working. There is no point trying to hide or just talk (as we sometimes believe it when you're a kid and we have not had a real job interviews) ... Do not hesitate to ask questions without fear of sounding a bit naive ... Being curious is after all a reflection of our motivation!

I know 15 days later whether or not I am selected for the following ... If yes, then I will right a face with two group leaders (chiefs who manage daily CR), an interview with the director of human resources, and a test drive in a van.

Along with my contacts with the various training centers, I soon felt the urge to work for urban transport in my town Since the EMT that I made at home. Good thing the company was just in the process of recruitment for the permit in-house training. You'll

even if the site is called "Driver-Receiver ..." because my dealings with this company have borne fruit. Indeed, this title usually refers to city drivers everywhere in France (except in Paris where they still wear the label "Machinist").

Being selected by a company of this size was not a simple thing ...

Following the application that I had returned (armed with a beautiful letter), I was summoned in the month of June for an afternoon of various tests from an outside search firm the company. The day

tests, we are a small thirty candidates, a total of about 60 whose cases have been deemed admissible. It's a psychologist who received us and makes us take the tests. They proved in principle quite similar to those spent with the AFT-IFTIM , but longer, varied and extensive.

Program:
  • logical reasoning tests: stories flowing from taps, switches that turn a particular piece but not others, sequences of numbers that must find the next .. . Basically neither more nor less than what is typically found in IQ tests!
  • representation tests in space: boxes of various shapes drawn in 3D which he must choose which paper folding in 2D can recreate the same form, diagrams of pulleys and levers effects that must choose which requires more strength, etc.. Short problems that are solved in the end that visually and intuitively, without calculation, and that verify that manages to accurately represent movements of complex shapes in space ... I guess to drive articulated buses in the city center, it might actually be important ;-)
  • a mental arithmetic test, which allows easy whether you go be able to make money on the sale of tickets
  • the icing on the cake that was not present for testing of the AFT-IFTIM: a personality test of 300 questions! It's quite long and a little disturbing because we feel that the test tries to identify truly all aspects of our psychology. only thing missing is the micro-probe inserted into the brain and the lie detector ... Anyway, I think it's best to be as honest as possible because the results will be analyzed by the psychologist, which my gut tells me she has a nose for detecting phonies ...
I think that's all ... It takes a total 3 good hours. In contrast, AFT IFTIM, there is no test of general knowledge and geography. By cons tests are generally more difficult. It feels pretty elitist will pick people who still have a little savvy. As I had said the operations manager a few weeks earlier: "we no longer want just turners wheel!" . I think that is clear.

We are taught that, if successful tests, we will be convened by the recruitment firm, for an individual interview with the psychologist in 1-2 months. No hurry ... that's for sure ... and we do were only the beginning!

As I explained in this article , one method for forming the permit D and FIMO, without spending between 4,000 € and 10,000 €, is to go around training centers in your area to find those who would have won a tender for the Region or Pole job. Allowing them to take a number of job seekers in training, all funded by the entity in question.

I am fortunate to have several centers in close proximity to my home. So I started in early June, contact with one who seemed the best known: the AFPA. Big disappointment for several reasons. Already, when there is a vacancy for a training near you and you fill out the appropriate form on their site, you are sent several days after confirmation of receipt and then ... nothing (tested and approved several times). Then the phone is not much better: during my first call, the manager informs me that the center is not ready to have budget for undertaking additional training because of budget cuts ... even though it is a session for which registration is open, according their site. A few weeks later, I see two new training courses appear on their site ... but the phone can not reach anyone aware of anything. And therefore unable to register. Not very serious stuff.

Promotrans and Forget: nice people inform me they have no budgets for job seekers right now, but it gives me the price and it tells me that I can be financed through a AFPR or an individual request from the Region. What I knew already but it's nice to have people who seem to know whereof they speak.

AFT-IFTIM: the jackpot. They look accustomed to this procedure, have regular budgets and for me therefore to scéance tests. I go there a few days later. These simple tests: reasoning, logic, spatial representation, general culture, a little geography (locate the major cities of France on a map). Not very complicated. I get a few days later a letter announcing the success of these tests and invited me to an individual appointment ... 2 ½ months later. Well, either ... The mail also states the necessity of making an EMT before the date of appointment ... I did two, I guess Enough!

To return to the AFT-IFTIM: two and a half months later, that is to say late August, I went to the interview face a charge. Not knowing what to expect, I confess that I did not particularly well prepared. The appointment will go pretty well though and look like a job interview, in shorter and cooler. I still entitled to the usual questions: "What are your strengths, what are your areas for improvement, why do you want to direct you to the transportation of persons ..." It does not last more than 15 minutes. I also want to ask some questions about the device. Learn while I'm at anyway priori included in the list of persons who may have access to training, subject to passing a driving test on road (truck eh, not by bus). We will contact me for this last test a few times as possible before my training. The only disturbing detail is that it is impossible to predict when a candidate actually be back in training. According to the dates of sessions, availability and external funding, the wait can last from a few weeks ... a year!

We are currently two months after this appointment and I do not always know more. I still do not was summoned for a test drive. It's been a total of 4 ½ months I had my first contact with the center ...

As I work in this trade before 2024, I had maximized my chances of funding by contacting the company also transit in my city ... I'll tell you in future articles the many steps incurred in this matter.

Curious to know a more about the driver's job coach specifically, I decided last June to make a second EMT with a bus in my area. One who accepted my request makes sightseeing transportation, regular lines and extra-urban transport for school kids in the countryside. I could not accompany the driver engaged in tourism because of découchage, the company obviously did not pay me as a mere "observer trainee. So on routes from the outback to the city center, on-line education, and transportation of kids to the gym I had the opportunity to accompany drivers.

Taking early service is less than for urban routes, it does not start until about 7am. The company is much smaller and the atmosphere is pot luck: my tutor, also very nice, sometimes almost in slippers with curlers on her head. I start to 6:20, this time with another tutor. We take a bus to make 2 round trips between downtown and the regional capital of a little town located about fifteen miles to the south. Conclusion

Unable to accompany a driver in tourism, I can not say that the practice of the profession of conductor has a lot of difference between urban and extra-urban. Some aspects give me more desire to work in the city (full time, good salary package, variety of lines), others inspire me otherwise (attitude and customer coolest pleasant country roads). It is, after these two EMT, very difficult for me to choose exactly what type of business direct me to start my career.
