syndrome of Asperger's: the invisible handicap

Yep! My son has an invisible disability. It seems to work well but often can not. As it is endowed, the problem is not academic success. Disability takes the form of bad behavior, and it is difficult to distinguish.

This title is not mine. However, I appropriate today as it is, in my view, the problem.

Children with Asperger syndrome often have high IQs, some are very gifted and most have very good language skills, although they are often unable to adequately express their thoughts and emotions. This syndrome is similar to autism, although different, and represents one of the most complicated problems that society faces.

Asperger syndrome is a form of high functioning autism - high level of social adaptability ... Excuse me ???... in fact, it's a little fuzzy. To some experts, it is indeed a form of autism, for others it is a disease (a disease not because we're born and not heal with.) Related to autism, but separated .. . For Government is ... nothing (Asperger syndrome is not recognized by its instances (NDT and QC). To me it is a brain defect that causes the inability to read minds, to extrapolate, imagine learn not association, which causes a deficiency in social skills.

Before continuing sharing our experience with my family and me, I think it is good to give you a brief definition of what Asperger syndrome. In order to explain it as simply as possible, I met passages of text (in italics) that I find it quite explicit while remaining accessible. I apologize for not have written references ... Early in my research, I was not paying attention to these details ..... I took you to not take offense!

It is very easy not to help these children. They have no outward signs of disability and are often very intelligent, able to disguise their shortcomings with big words or using a mountain of knowledge. They love repetition, language and learning and can easily memorize large amounts of information, but can not accept changes sensory (smell, light, touch, etc ...) to establish or interrupt routines . Distractions like this are losing their footing and they can react violently.

"A child will understand the theory of relativity yet. But it will explain hundreds of times he must line up to go to recess."

To me, this sentence says it all! Because the line up, to his room, dressing, do not go to school in pajamas, be polite and appropriate, raise his hand before speaking, have a method to organize, are not hitting social actions.

Unlike autism, there are no noticeable delays in language or cognition, in personal skills or adaptive behavior, with the exception of social interaction.

Learning by association
When Tom was two, we had a gas fireplace in the lounge. Style wood stove. Since our move, I educated the children about the dangers of home: That's hot! it burns! Keep Away! :-) It did not take 2 minutes to Tom puts his hand on the stove top. He knew the definition of the word "hot". Unable to deduct, "burn" had no meaning for him. He absolutely had to experiment. Result: 2nd degree burns!

Asperger syndrome can lead to tics, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behavior, of defiance, attention deficit, sensory problems, mood swings and even access rabies. And it gets frustrating and child, and his entourage

Language Nonverbal
You never had a dog. However, during the first ride of your new puppy, when he will turn in circles, nose to the ground, you will figure quite rightly that he will soon make his little gift. My son will pull on the leash because this "language", he does not understand.

The biggest obstacle for these children is to link the characteristics of the syndrome with the terms of the social environment. There must be a balance between giving these children the world predictable and they need to prepare for a world that is not at all.

The real world is built on facts abstract and unpredictable. Take the example of the school: the children set out different ideas for discussions or fire alarm goes off. This can make a very stressful day for these students. The teacher took the opportunity to see the lesson in progress for a new topic. The student with Asperger's syndrome will remind you that today the lesson is supposed to cover pages 17-23 of the book.

Understanding the situation is essential to help these children get a good education. Bad behavior is not defiance. It's just that these children can not understand the problem and monitor their reactions to seemingly mundane activities.

As in all things, the Asperger Syndrome has good sides. Among them include a more developed intelligence, an impressive capacity for learning, a phenomenal memory, a great difficulty lie, charm (innocence) irresistible. Yep! :-). Aspis people therefore have no disability and are doing quite well as adults. They are definitely "strange" but are autonomous and socially appropriate, or at least sufficiently adapted to live and understand some of our society.
